Frequently Asked Questions

For closed-loop cruises from US ports, a birth certificate and photo ID technically suffice. However, Mexican Riviera cruises from LA are often one-way or have flight connections — carry a passport to be safe.

Caribbean Mexico (Cozumel, Costa Maya, Progreso) is on the east/Gulf coast — warm water, coral reefs, Mayan ruins. Mexican Riviera (Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan) is the Pacific coast — dramatic cliffs, whale watching, resort towns.

Tourist areas in cruise ports are well-patrolled and generally safe. Cozumel is an island with very low crime. For mainland ports, stick to organized excursions or well-known tourist zones.

Stick to bottled water, and skip ice in drinks from street vendors. Restaurants in tourist areas typically use purified water and ice. Your cruise ship water is always safe.
