The best beach in the area, though, requires a boat: take the 20-minute Ultramar ferry to Isla Mujeres and walk to Playa Norte, a knee-deep, glass-calm expanse that regularly makes world-top-ten lists. Golf-cart around the island, snorkel the Garrafon reef, and catch the late-afternoon ferry back as the light goes golden. It's the single best day of most Cancun beach trips.

Timing honesty: November through April is dry, warm, and nearly seaweed-free — peak beach condition. May through October is hotter and more humid, with sargassum seaweed arriving in waves that vary by week and by beach (north-facing beaches and Isla Mujeres are usually the cleanest).
