Playa Paraiso

Carretera Boca Paila, 77780 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Stunning white sand beach with turquoise water. Instagram-famous palm trees.

Photos, swimming, iconic Tulum beach, beauty
5.0 Excellent
Local Tips
Arrive at Playa Paraiso before 9 AM to avoid the tour bus crowds and secure the best beachfront spots at the beach clubs without having to pay premium prices for premium areas. Most day-trippers don't arrive until 10:30 AM or later.
Instead of paying high prices at the main beach clubs, walk 200 meters north toward the public access area where local vendors sell fresh coconuts, elotes, and cold beers at half the price of the resort establishments while still enjoying the same pristine beach.
Beach

Playa Pescadores

Below Tulum Ruins

Public beach below the ruins. Beautiful setting with cliffs as backdrop.

Free beach access, swimming, views of ruins
4.0 Very Good
Local Tips
Visit Playa Pescadores between 6:30-8:30 AM when local fishermen return with their catch. You'll witness an authentic slice of Tulum life as they sort fish on the beach, and many palapas will have the freshest seafood of the day available for immediate preparation.
Instead of renting beach chairs from resort areas, walk to the northern section near the fishermen's boats where local families set up simple plastic chairs and umbrellas for 50-100 pesos per day - a fraction of what beachfront hotels charge for the same beach access.
Beach

Playa Ruinas

Tulum Archaeological Site, Carretera Federal, 77780 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Small beach directly below the ruins. Iconic Tulum view.

Photos with ruins, iconic view, swimming
5.0 Excellent
Local Tips
Visit Playa Ruinas between 7:30-8:30 AM before the archaeological site opens at 9 AM. You'll have the beach almost entirely to yourself and can take photos of the ruins from below without crowds. The morning light is also perfect for photography, and you can still access the beach even when the ruins are closed.
Be extremely careful of the strong undertow and currents at Playa Ruinas - locals avoid swimming here during afternoon hours when winds pick up. The beach looks calm but has caught many tourists off guard. Stick to wading in shallow water and always swim near other people. The rocky areas can also be slippery when wet.
Beach

Ziggy Beach

Beach Zone Km 6

Popular beach club with restaurant, bar, and loungers. Great scene.

Beach club atmosphere, food, drinks, loungers
4.0 Very Good
Local Tips
Arrive at Ziggy Beach before 10 AM to secure the best palapa spots and enjoy the beach before the day-trip crowds from Cancún arrive. The beach gets packed between 11 AM and 4 PM, but clears out beautifully for sunset.
Skip the expensive beachfront restaurants and walk 2 minutes inland to the small local taquerias on the jungle side of the road - you'll get authentic cochinita pibil tacos for 30 pesos instead of 200+ pesos at the beach clubs.
Beach

Soliman Bay

20 min north of Tulum

Secluded bay with calm water perfect for snorkeling. Less crowded.

Snorkeling, seclusion, calm water, kayaking
5.0 Excellent
Local Tips
Visit Soliman Bay on weekday mornings before 10 AM to have this pristine stretch almost entirely to yourself - most tourists don't realize how accessible it is and only discover it later in the day when word spreads from other beachgoers.
The cenote opening at the north end of Soliman Bay looks inviting but has strong currents that connect to underground cave systems - locals know to admire it from the surface only, as several experienced divers have had close calls in the unmarked underwater passages.
Beach

Akumal Beach

25 min north

Famous for swimming with sea turtles. Protected bay with turtle habitat.

Swimming with turtles, snorkeling, families
5.0 Excellent
Local Tips
Visit Akumal Beach between 7-9 AM for the best sea turtle spotting opportunities. The turtles feed on seagrass in shallow waters during early morning hours before the tour groups arrive, and the water is clearest then. Most tourists don't arrive until 10 AM, so you'll have a more peaceful experience with better visibility for snorkeling.
Don't use regular sunscreen when swimming with sea turtles - it's harmful to marine life and locals will ask you to rinse off first. Instead, buy biodegradable reef-safe sunscreen from the small shops in Akumal town (about 100 pesos cheaper than at the beach) or wear a rash guard. The turtle guides are strict about this and will turn away swimmers with regular sunscreen.
Beach

Xcacel Beach

Between Tulum and Akumal

Protected turtle nesting beach. Pristine and undeveloped with cenote.

Nature, seclusion, turtles, cenote, pristine beach
5.0 Excellent
Local Tips
Visit Xcacel during turtle nesting season (May through October) in the early morning hours between 6-8 AM. You'll not only avoid the crowds but also have the best chance of witnessing sea turtles returning to the ocean after nesting, as the beach is an official turtle sanctuary. Local guides often do informal walks during this time.
Be extremely careful with flash photography and bright lights if you visit during turtle season, as this can disorient nesting turtles and hatchlings. Locals will quickly call you out for this behavior, and there are actually hefty fines. Use red-filtered flashlights only if needed, and keep phone screens dimmed.
Beach

Chemuyil Beach

Between Tulum and Akumal

Small local beach less touristy. Basic but authentic.

Local experience, budget, less crowded
3.0 Rating
Local Tips
Visit Chemuyil Beach on weekday mornings between 8-10 AM when the local fishing boats are out and day-trippers haven't arrived yet. You'll have nearly the entire pristine stretch to yourself, plus the lighting is perfect for photos with the turquoise water at its most vibrant.
Park at the small dirt lot near the Chemuyil cenote entrance (about 200 meters inland) instead of paying the beachfront parking fees. It's free and locals use this spot - just walk through the mangroves on the well-worn path that leads directly to the quieter southern end of the beach.
