Cane Garden Bay

Cane Garden Bay, Tortola, BVI

Most popular beach in Tortola. Mile-long crescent of white sand with calm water. Beach bars, restaurants, water sports. Great snorkeling on reef. Lively atmosphere with live music.

Local Tips
Visit Cane Garden Bay early morning (before 9 AM) or late afternoon (after 4 PM) to avoid the cruise ship crowds. The bay gets packed between 10 AM - 3 PM when day-trippers arrive from St. Thomas and other islands.
Instead of buying expensive drinks at the beachfront bars, grab local beverages from the small market behind Quito's Gazebo - it's a 5-minute walk inland and costs half the price. Many locals do this before settling on the beach.
Beach

Smuggler's Cove

West End, Tortola, BVI

Secluded horseshoe-shaped bay reached by rough road. Pristine white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water. Excellent snorkeling. Peaceful and uncrowded. Worth the journey.

Local Tips
Visit Smuggler's Cove early morning (before 9 AM) or late afternoon (after 4 PM) to avoid the cruise ship crowds and charter boat day-trippers who typically arrive between 10 AM and 3 PM. The beach is most peaceful during these times and you'll have better access to the prime shaded spots under the sea grape trees.
Park at the small dirt lot near the entrance and walk the short trail rather than trying to drive all the way down to the beach - the narrow road can be tricky for larger vehicles and parking is extremely limited at the bottom. The 5-minute walk through the vegetation is part of the experience and saves you from getting stuck or having to make a difficult three-point turn.
Beach

Brewers Bay

North Shore, Tortola, BVI

Long stretch of white sand beach popular with locals. Good snorkeling on both ends. Camping allowed. Less developed, more natural. Popular with budget travelers.

Local Tips
Visit Brewers Bay on weekday mornings before 10 AM to have the beach almost entirely to yourself. Most cruise ship passengers and day-trippers don't arrive until mid-morning, and the locals who work nearby often take their lunch breaks here instead.
The western end of Brewers Bay near the old sugar mill ruins has strong undertows and unpredictable currents, especially during winter months. Locals avoid swimming there and stick to the calmer eastern section near the main beach access point.
