Beach

Frenchman's Cove

Port Antonio, Jamaica

Private beach where freshwater river meets Caribbean Sea. Lush tropical setting, unique swimming experience. Entry fee required. Beautiful scenery, perfect for photos. Romantic atmosphere.

Local Tips
Visit Frenchman's Cove on weekday mornings (Tuesday-Thursday) between 8-10am to have the beach almost entirely to yourself. Most cruise ship passengers and day-trippers arrive after 11am, and locals typically come later in the day.
Bring your own snorkeling gear and drinks in a cooler - the beach bar prices are significantly marked up for tourists. Local vendors sometimes walk the beach selling fresh coconuts and local snacks at much better prices than the official facilities.
Beach

Boston Bay Beach

Boston Bay, near Port Antonio, Jamaica

Famous surfing beach on north coast. Birthplace of jerk cuisine with original jerk pits. Good waves for experienced surfers. Beach with local vibe. Jerk chicken and pork available.

Local Tips
Visit Boston Bay Beach early morning (6:30-8:00 AM) or late afternoon (4:30-6:00 PM) to avoid the cruise ship crowds and tour bus groups that typically arrive between 10 AM-3 PM. The beach is practically empty at sunrise, and you'll have the best jerk chicken vendors setting up fresh for the day.
When buying jerk chicken from the beach vendors, locals always ask for 'bun and cheese' (festival bread and cheese) on the side - it's not advertised but most vendors have it available and it's the traditional way to eat jerk chicken here. Also, bargaining is expected, but start your negotiation by complimenting the smoke from their pit first.
Beach

San San Beach (Fairy Hill Beach)

San San, Port Antonio, Jamaica

Beautiful beach near Blue Lagoon. White sand, calm water, offshore island. Popular beach for swimming and relaxing. Easy access with facilities.

Local Tips
Visit San San Beach early morning around 7-8 AM on weekdays when the beach is practically empty and the water is calmest. Most tourists don't realize the beach is accessible this early, and you'll have the stunning crescent-shaped bay almost entirely to yourself before the hotel guests and day visitors arrive around 10 AM.
Be aware that San San Beach is technically private property belonging to the nearby villas, but locals know there's a small public access path on the eastern end near the rocks. Don't be deterred if security seems present - politely explain you're visiting the public section, and avoid walking directly in front of the private villa areas to respect residents' privacy.
