When to visit Maho Beach
Maho Beach quick facts
Getting around Maho Beach
The Maho area is compact and walkable, with most hotels, beaches, restaurants, and the airport within easy walking distance. Taxis are readily available for longer trips around the island, and rental cars provide flexibility for exploring both the Dutch and French sides of St. Maarten.
Rental car
A rental car is helpful if you want to explore beyond Maho and visit other beaches or the French side, but not necessary if staying in the Maho resort area.
Public transit
Limited public bus service exists but is not reliable or convenient for tourists. Most visitors rely on taxis or rental cars.
Rideshare & taxis
Uber and Lyft are not available, but taxis are plentiful and rates are regulated. Most hotels can arrange transportation or you can hail taxis easily in the Maho area.
Local tips for Maho Beach
Insider tips
- Arrive early afternoon to secure a good spot at Sunset Beach Bar before the crowds and main wave of afternoon flights.
- Download a flight tracking app to know exactly when the big jets are coming in for the most spectacular photo opportunities.
- Hold onto your belongings tightly during jet takeoffs as the powerful engines can blow lightweight items away.
- The best photos are taken from the beach side of the fence, not from behind the airport fence where many tourists mistakenly go.
- Visit on weekdays when possible as weekends can be extremely crowded, especially when cruise ships are in port.
- Bring waterproof phone protection as the combination of sand, salt spray, and excitement often leads to dropped devices.
- The jet blast during takeoffs is much more intense than landings - stay well back from the fence when planes depart.
- Sunset Beach Bar posts daily flight schedules, so check these rather than relying on outdated online timetables.
- Consider combining your visit with nearby Mullet Bay for actual swimming since Maho Beach is quite small and often crowded.
