Mero Beach

Mero, Dominica

Popular black volcanic sand beach on west coast. Calm water, good swimming. Beach bars and restaurants. Weekend barbecues with locals. Authentic Caribbean beach experience.

Local Tips
Visit Mero Beach on weekday mornings before 10 AM to have the black sand beach almost entirely to yourself - weekends bring families from Roseau, and cruise ship passengers often arrive mid-morning when ships are in port.
The black volcanic sand at Mero Beach gets extremely hot during midday sun - bring flip-flops or water shoes as the sand can burn bare feet, and locals always set up under the coconut palms or bring umbrellas for this reason.
Beach

Champagne Beach

Soufriere, Dominica

Unique beach where volcanic hot springs bubble up through sand and water creating champagne effect. Excellent snorkeling with warm bubbles. Black sand, dramatic coastline.

Local Tips
Visit Champagne Beach early morning between 7-9 AM when the geothermal bubbles are most active and visible in the water, and you'll have the beach practically to yourself before the cruise ship day-trippers arrive around 10 AM.
The volcanic rocks along the shoreline can be extremely sharp and slippery when wet - locals always wear water shoes or old sneakers rather than going barefoot, especially when entering the water where the bubbles are strongest.
Beach

Batibou Beach

Northeast coast, Dominica

Remote pristine beach featured in Pirates of the Caribbean. Golden sand, turquoise water, palm trees. Accessible by boat or challenging hike. Secluded paradise.

Local Tips
Visit Batibou Beach on weekday mornings before 10 AM to have this stunning stretch of golden sand almost entirely to yourself, as most tour groups don't arrive until after lunch and locals typically come on weekends.
The currents at Batibou can be deceptively strong, especially during the rainy season (June-November) - locals always swim near the left side of the beach where there's more protection from the rocky outcrop, rather than in the center where the undertow is stronger.
