Beach

Paradise Beach

Carretera Costera Sur Km 14.5, 77675 Cozumel, Q.R., Mexico

Large popular beach club with full amenities. Inflatable water park, pools, restaurants, and water sports. Very family-friendly.

Families, day visitors, cruise passengers, water park, full amenities
4.5 Excellent
Local Tips
Visit Paradise Beach before 10 AM or after 4 PM to avoid the cruise ship crowds. The beach is virtually empty early morning, and you'll get the best service at the beach club restaurants when staff aren't overwhelmed.
Bring your own snorkel gear instead of renting at the beach - rental prices are inflated for tourists. Also, buy drinks at the small convenience store just outside the beach entrance rather than at the beach bar to save 40-50% on beverages.
The best snorkeling spot at Paradise Beach is actually at the far right end near the rocky area, not the main swimming area where most tourists go. The coral formations and fish variety are much better, and it's usually uncrowded.
Beach

Playa Palancar

Carretera Costera Sur Km 19.5, Zona Hotelera Sur, 77687 Cozumel, Q.R., Mexico

Beautiful uncrowded beach near famous Palancar Reef. Clear calm water perfect for swimming and snorkeling. More tranquil than north beaches.

Swimming, snorkeling, relaxation, less crowded, natural setting
4.7 Excellent
Local Tips
Visit Playa Palancar early morning (7:30-9:30 AM) before the cruise ship day-trippers arrive, or after 4:30 PM when they've departed. You'll have the pristine white sand almost to yourself and can enjoy the beach chairs without the usual crowds.
Be extremely cautious of the strong undertow at Playa Palancar, especially during winter months (November-February) when swells are larger. Locals know to stay close to shore as the current can pull swimmers out quickly. The beautiful turquoise water can be deceptive - always swim parallel to the beach if caught in a current.
Skip the expensive beach club fees by walking south along the shoreline for about 200 meters to find free public access areas with the same beautiful water and sand. The beach clubs charge $15-25 USD per person for chair rental, but you can bring your own towel and enjoy the identical beach experience for free.
Beach

Mr. Sancho's Beach Club

South coast, Carretera Costera Sur Km 15

All-inclusive beach club with excellent food, massage services, and water sports. More adult-focused than Paradise Beach.

Adults, all-inclusive day, massage, water sports, good food
4.6 Excellent
Local Tips
Arrive before 10 AM to secure the best palapas near the water and avoid the cruise ship crowds that typically arrive between 11 AM and 2 PM. The beach is most peaceful early morning and after 4 PM.
The day pass includes food and drinks, but portions can be small. Ask your server about getting extra sides of rice, beans, or tortillas at no additional charge - they're usually happy to provide them.
The massage palapas on the beach offer better value than the spa - same licensed therapists but lower prices. Book early as locals know this secret and slots fill up quickly.
Beach

Nachi Cocom Beach Club

South coast, Carretera Costera Sur Km 16.5

Upscale beach club with Balinese beds, infinity pool, and gourmet food. More refined atmosphere than other beach clubs.

Couples, upscale experience, relaxation, good food, less crowded
4.5 Excellent
Local Tips
Visit Nachi Cocom between 10am-12pm on weekdays to enjoy the beach club before cruise ship passengers arrive. Most cruise excursions hit the beach clubs after lunch, so you'll have a much more peaceful experience and better service from staff during morning hours.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen or purchase it there - Cozumel takes marine protection seriously and some areas may not allow regular sunscreen. The staff appreciates when visitors show they care about protecting the coral reefs that make Cozumel's waters so special.
Ask about their 'day pass' option which includes beach access, lounge chairs, and sometimes a food/drink credit for around $30-40 USD per person. This is much cheaper than paying à la carte for everything separately, especially if you plan to spend the whole day there.
Beach

Playa San Juan

North of San Miguel, Carretera Costera Norte

Local beach popular with Cozumel residents. Very authentic, less touristy. Simple beach with calm waters.

Local experience, budget-friendly, authentic, calm water, families
4.2 Very Good
Local Tips
Visit Playa San Juan early morning (7-9 AM) or late afternoon (4-6 PM) when the cruise ship day-trippers are either not yet arrived or heading back to port. The beach transforms from crowded to almost private during these windows.
Skip the expensive beachfront restaurants and walk 2 blocks inland to the local comedores (small family restaurants) where you can get authentic Yucatecan food for a third of the price. Many locals recommend Comedor Lupita for their cochinita pibil.
The northern end of the beach has stronger currents and occasional drop-offs that aren't always marked. Locals swim closer to the central area where the water stays shallow longer and lifeguards are more present during busy periods.
Beach

Playa Mia Grand Beach Park

South coast, Carretera Costera Sur Km 14

Large beach park with water slides, floating playground, zip line, and many activities. Very popular with families and cruise passengers.

Families with kids, water slides, activities, all-inclusive
4.4 Very Good
Local Tips
Arrive right when they open at 8 AM to secure the best palapas closest to the water - locals know these prime spots get claimed fast and you'll avoid the cruise ship crowds that typically arrive around 10-11 AM.
Book your day pass directly through their website instead of through cruise excursions or hotel concierges - you'll save about 30-40% and get the same access to all amenities including the floating water park and unlimited food and drinks.
The floating water park (aqua park) gets extremely busy after noon, so hit it first thing after you arrive - the trampolines and slides are much more enjoyable when you're not waiting in long lines with screaming kids.
Beach

Chen Rio Beach

East coast, wild side

Rugged east coast beach with dramatic waves and natural pool protected by rocks. Restaurant with great food. Scenic and less developed.

Scenic views, natural pool, authentic restaurant, photography, nature
4.3 Very Good
Local Tips
Visit Chen Rio on weekdays between 10am-2pm when the restaurant is open but before the cruise ship excursions arrive around 3pm. This gives you access to the beach chairs and facilities while avoiding the afternoon crowds.
The rocky coastline here creates strong undertows and unpredictable currents. Even strong swimmers should stay close to shore and avoid the areas where waves crash directly against the rocks - locals know this isn't a swimming beach despite its beauty.
Walk 100 meters north of the main restaurant area to find a secluded rocky outcrop that frames the crashing waves perfectly. The contrast between the white limestone and turquoise water creates stunning shots, especially during golden hour around 5:30pm.
Beach

Punta Morena

East coast

Remote east coast beach with powerful waves. Beach bar with food and drinks. Very scenic but dangerous for swimming.

Scenery, beach bar, watching waves, photography, adventurous
4.1 Very Good
Local Tips
Visit Punta Morena on weekday mornings (Tuesday-Thursday, 9-11am) when the beach is practically empty and the lighting is perfect. Most tourists hit the west side beaches first, so the east coast spots like Punta Morena don't get busy until after lunch.
The waves at Punta Morena can be deceptively strong due to the open Caribbean exposure - even experienced swimmers should stay close to shore. The undertow here is much stronger than the protected west side beaches, and there are no lifeguards on duty.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen and apply it generously - the east side of Cozumel has less natural shade and the sun reflects intensely off the white sand. Many visitors get severely burned here because they underestimate the UV exposure compared to the more sheltered west coast beaches.
