Beach

Dickenson Bay

St. John's, Antigua

Mile-long crescent of white sand with calm turquoise water. Water sports, beach bars, restaurants. Popular with families. Sandals Grande resort on southern end. Safe swimming.

Local Tips
Visit Dickenson Bay early morning before 8 AM or after 4 PM when the cruise ship passengers have departed. The beach transforms from crowded to nearly private, and you'll have better access to the prime spots near Sandals resort without the daytime crowds.
Walk to the far northern end of the beach near the Sandals property boundary where local fishermen sometimes sell fresh catch directly from their boats. You can get lobster and fish at a fraction of restaurant prices, and many locals know which fishermen are most reliable and offer the best quality.
Beach

Half Moon Bay

Southeast coast, Antigua

Stunning crescent bay with dramatic Atlantic waves. Pink-tinged sand, powerful surf. Popular with surfers and bodyboarders. National park beach. Less crowded, more natural.

Local Tips
Visit Half Moon Bay early morning (7-9 AM) or late afternoon (4-6 PM) to avoid the cruise ship crowds that typically arrive mid-morning and leave by early afternoon. The beach is practically empty during these times and you'll have better access to the prime spots near the center of the crescent.
Be cautious of the strong undertow on the eastern side of the bay, especially during winter months (December-March) when the Atlantic swells are bigger. Locals always swim closer to the western end where the water is calmer and safer, particularly if you're not a strong swimmer.
Beach

Jolly Beach

Jolly Harbour, Antigua

Long stretch of white sand beach with calm shallow water. Family-friendly with safe swimming. Beach resorts, bars, water sports. Jolly Harbour marina nearby. Popular sunset spot.

Local Tips
Visit Jolly Beach on weekdays between 7-9 AM when the cruise ship passengers haven't arrived yet and the resort guests are still at breakfast. You'll have the entire stretch of white sand practically to yourself, plus the morning light is perfect for photos without harsh shadows.
Walk to the far right end of the beach (away from the resort) where local vendors sell fresh coconuts and local snacks at half the price of the resort. Look for 'Coconut Man' who sets up under the sea grape trees - he charges EC$5 for coconut water versus EC$15 at the resort bars.
Beach

Valley Church Beach

West coast, Antigua

Quiet secluded beach with powdery white sand and calm water. Less developed than other beaches. Perfect for peaceful relaxation. Good snorkeling. Popular with locals.

Local Tips
Visit Valley Church Beach early morning before 9 AM or after 4 PM to avoid the cruise ship crowds that arrive mid-day. The beach gets packed between 10 AM-3 PM when multiple tour groups arrive, but locals know the golden hours offer pristine conditions with plenty of space and better photo lighting.
Be cautious of the strong undertow on the northern end of Valley Church Beach, especially during swells. Locals stick to the more protected southern section near the resort area for swimming. The beautiful waves that make this beach photogenic can be deceptively powerful for inexperienced swimmers.
